Stadl

Stadl is within the Murtal Region, which can boast of having produced some of the greatest down hill skiers ever, Klammer, Walchofer and Gorschl to name but three.

SFun in the snowtadl sits in the middle of 500 km of skiing from a 10-40 minute drive away. It truly is the perfect location for snow sport lovers.

The Region not only offers excellent ski and boarding in family friendly ski areas with state of the art lifts, it also has tobogganing, horse drawn sleigh rides, ice skating and curling.

Some areas are covered by British Tour Operators e.g. Obertauern and Bad Klein Kirchheim but in many of the resorts you will only find mainly locals which is excellent if you wish to get away from the crowds and experience a truly authentic Austrian atmosphere.

Kreischberg

The Kreischberg ski regionJust a 10 minute drive to this lovely ski area, here you will find ski/board schools, ski/boot hire and lockers. On the slopes there is a plenty to do for the kids including tubing, Dinopark, trampolines, magic carpets and Fred & Barney Yabba Dabba Do Land. For the big kids there is the speed run, huge half pipe Snow Board World Championship Arena. A new six seater chair lift ”The Panorama Lift” is now up and running with a new superwide panorama run which drops a breathtaking 600 meters over 3 km

Turracher HoheTurracher Hohe

Just 12 miles from the chalet is the beautiful ski area of Turracher Hohe with skiing between 1400-2205 metres. It is one of the most snow sure ski areas in the whole of Austria. Skiing is split between 2 mountains connected by a ski taxi “skidoo” which transports you over the frozen lake, which is an experience in itself. There is also night tobogganing and ice skating as well as children’s parks etc.

Obertauern

Just a 40 minute drive away from the chalet Obertauern was voted Austria’s second best ski area after Ishgl. It is also the most snow sure Austrian resort and is the training ground of the Austrian ski team. As you would expect of a large resort it can be quite busy but is a perfect April ski resort.

Bad Kleinkirchheim

This area is approximately a forty minute drive from Stadl. This is a more touristy area and is used by British Tour Operators. It is a scenic drive over a good mountain road. There are over 100 km of skiing but is a challenging area for intermediate/advanced skiers. There are many steep red runs and only one blue run in the whole resort. There is also a new fantastic Spa area, the Romerbad, with a swimming pool and three floors containing many different steam rooms, saunas and Jacuzzis to relax your aching limbs or perhaps you could treat yourself to a massage.

Mauterndorf

This area is approximately a 25 minute drive from Stadl. This is a superb ski area with something for everyone. There is a long red and blue run down to St Michael and in all approximately 50km of skiing including other blue and red runs and a couple more challenging blacks. There are no queues and plenty of traditional restaurants.

Flattnitz

This area is approximately a 15 minute drive from Stadl. This is ideal for a warm up ski on say Saturday afternoon when you arrive (although it may well not be open mid week). There are about three long red/blue runs but the lift pass is cheap starting from about 13 euros. We did not see any restaurants but would definitely recommend it for a couple of hours on your first afternoon.

Katchberg/Aineck

This area is approximately a 25 minute drive from Stadl. It offers 80-90 km of skiing again with no queues and excellent restaurants.

Murau

This is approximately a 30 minute drive from Stadl. It has about 10 km runs and a couple of traditional restaurants. There are however only two drag lifts which can be a little tiring on your legs.

USEFUL INFORMATION

All the listed ski areas are extremely easy to access and have good parking facilities a very short walk from the bottom of the Lifts and Lift Pass Offices. We have found driving to a resort very easy and preferable to a long walk across town with skis or waiting up to an hour for a busy ski bus.

You may wish to consider buying your passes on a daily basis as they become cheaper the later in the day you visit

Don’t forget that with most of the hands free passes the price will include a deposit of 3-5 euros which will be refunded when you return your pass to the Lift Office at the end of the day.

You may also wish to take a German phrase book/dictionary. These areas are mainly not used by British Package Tour Operators and many of the menus will not be in English and English is not always spoken by everyone.

There are also many other ski areas not listed above, including Fanningberg and Inner Kremms.

Staying in Stadl offers a fantastic base to explore several different areas. As most of the areas are skied by locals the prices tend to be very reasonable and you really get the feeling that this is the true Austria.
